LDR Prostate Focus Area

Thanks to a generous donation from the Brian Moran Foundation, the ABS is proud to offer a dedicated funding opportunity for radiation oncology residents committed to mastering LDR prostate brachytherapy. High-quality, high-volume prostate brachytherapy training is becoming increasingly scarce—yet the procedure remains a highly effective, versatile treatment option.

1. Proficiency in TRUS & Prostate Anatomy
  • Training in transrectal ultrasound setup and use with a stepper device.
  • Instruction on identifying prostate anatomy on ultrasound for treatment planning and seed placement.
2. Comprehensive Phantom-Based Training
  • Performing prostate volume studies.
  • Developing LDR treatment plans using clinical software.
  • Ordering and accepting LDR radioisotopes.
  • Utilizing different LDR seed placement techniques (e.g., freehand, stranded, Mick applicator).
  • Conducting post-implant dosimetry to assess implant quality.
3. Didactic Instruction on LDR Prostate
  • Delivering structured didactic sessions covering: Patient selection, indications, and contraindications for LDR prostate brachytherapy.
  • Selection of radioisotopes and dosimetric planning parameters.
  • Techniques for imaging and pre-operative/intraoperative planning.
  • Interpretation of post-implant imaging and dosimetry.
4. Clinical Case Participation
  • Providing residents with the opportunity to serve as the first assistant in at least one LDR prostate brachytherapy procedure.
  • Participation in at least 10 LDR or HDR prostate brachytherapy cases in 2 months.

We are looking for residents who demonstrate a profound commitment to incorporating LDR prostate brachytherapy into their future practice. Additionally, the training site where you apply and are accepted must offer LDR prostate brachytherapy.
